How to Invoice as a Freelancer in Nigeria
Invoicing is how freelancers turn completed work into money in the bank. This guide shows you how to invoice Nigerian clients, set payment terms, and build a professional image from day one.
Why freelancers need proper invoices
Sending your total over WhatsApp might work once, but it makes you look amateur and gives clients room to forget, negotiate, or delay. A proper invoice creates a paper trail, sets expectations, and makes you look like a real business.
Invoice immediately after delivery
The best time to send an invoice is right after you finish the work, while the value is still fresh in the client's mind. Waiting even 48 hours can delay payment.
Be specific about what you did
Instead of 'Website design — ₦150,000', break it into 'Homepage design', 'Mobile responsive layout', 'Revisions', etc. Clients pay faster when they understand what they are paying for.
Set clear payment terms
State your due date upfront: 'Payment due within 7 days' or 'Payment due on receipt'. Also include your preferred bank account and any late-payment policy.
Request a deposit for large jobs
For projects over ₦100,000, ask for 30–50% upfront. This protects your time and shows the client is serious. Send a deposit invoice first, then a final invoice.
Follow up professionally
A polite reminder 2–3 days before the due date, and another 2 days after, usually gets results. Keep it short and reference the invoice number.

- Issue date and due date
- Detailed list of services with rates
- Subtotal, VAT if applicable, and total
